Join in! Help us effectively manage the inaugural Loch Ness Challenge. You can be part of it and ensure everyone involved has a fantastic time! As such, we require a large number of volunteers. We look forward to support from our local communities around Loch Ness and Inverness in this challenge! So join us and be part of it!
How To Become A Volunteer
If you would like to Volunteer at The Loch Ness Challenge 2022, below outlines some of the positions available. Here you will find when exactly we will need you, our time schedule for recruitment and charity support involved.
Volunteer Positions Available
We need you! We require volunteers to help with the following activities:
- Car parking at the event hub in Dores
- Checkpoint duties
- Marshalling at key points out on the event routes
- Start & finish support
In addition, we may also require a few volunteers to act as support crews for our overseas ultra runners. Here you will support our overseas ultra-runners, who may struggle to bring support crews with them. As part of this challenge, it is a mandatory requirement for ultra-runners to have a support crew.
When Volunteers Are Required
With five events spread over three days and with one of the events (the ultra) overnight, there is a lot of time to cover! Ideally, we are looking for people to do 6-8 hour shifts but any assistance is welcome, even if only for a few hours. The total hours daily that we require volunteers, albeit at times only a few, are as follows:
- Thursday 19th May – 17:00 – 20:00
- Friday 20th May – 06:00 – 22:00
- Saturday 21st May –05:00- 24:00
- Sunday 22nd May – 00:00 – 23:00
In appreciation of your assistance with ensuring that the Loch Ness Challenge is a success and enjoyable for everyone, as a volunteer, you will receive event merchandise including a tote bag.
Schedule For Recruitment
The provisional schedule is as follows:
- April – confirmation of volunteers availability
- April- allocation of tasks to volunteers and notification of
- Mid -May – volunteer briefings notes distributed to all
- Thursday 19th May – verbal briefing to all volunteers
How To Volunteer
Charity Support
We welcome the support from charitable organisations who are able to provide a number of volunteers. In return, Visit Inverness Loch Ness is able to make a small donation to the charity in appreciation of their assistance.

Map of the Ultra Marathon Route
The map below shows the full 80-mile trail around Loch Ness. The northern red trail is part of the Great Glen Way. The South green trail forms the South Loch Ness Trail from Fort Augustus to Inverness.

These elevation profiles show a cross-sectional view of the terrain for our ultra marathon in Scotland along the Great Glen Way (sections 1 to 3 of the LN360°) and the South Loch Ness Trail (sections 4 to 6).
