Trail User Notes

On this page, we post notes about the South Loch Ness Trail (sections four to six of the Loch Ness 360 Trail), of which users should be aware. Please see How to Walk the Trail guide to walking each section.

Section Four – Fort Augustus to Foyers

Between Whitebridge and Foyers, there is a river crossing which although normally
very shallow, after heavy rain may result in wet feet!

Section Five – Foyers to Dores

The section of trail between Foyers and Inverfarigaig is not suitable for cyclists or
horse riders. The alternate route is via Glen Lia (Gleann Liath).

The section of trail over the Fair Haired Lads Pass has been deeply eroded by the recent heavy rains. Please exercise caution here particularly when descending the Pass

There is a short section of approximately 1 mile from the fish farm into the village of Dores where there is presently no suitable off road trail for users. Users should therefore walk along the right hand side of the B852 until they reach Dores

Section Six – Dores to Inverness

Between Dores and Torbreck Woods a low-level alternative to walking up on to
Drumashie Moor can be taken by following the cycle route at the side of the B862 to
Scaniport. Turn left here and follow a minor road that joins the route of the trail
again at Darris.

Please be aware of Forestry operations between Drumashie Moor and Cullaird Farm. These do not affect the trail, but there may be Forestry vehicles operating in this area.

General Notes

At a number of places along the route of the trail, it passes across land which is part
of a farm/ working estate. Please exercise caution here and keep dogs on a leash at
all times when livestock are in the vicinity. There have been a number of incidents
recently when this has not been adhered to resulting in stress to the animals.
